The Power & Communications Division, commonly referred to as "PCD", is focussed on HDPE conduit used for outside plant applications such as aerial and buried power transmission, telecommunications, FTTH, CaTV, SCADA, ITS. PCD collaborates with standards development organizations (SDOs) that set standards for manufacturing practices, quality control, product-testing and installation methods. PCD also educates designers, installers, users and government officials about HDPE conduit; establishes a forum for problem solving and new ideas; and maintains liaison with industry, educational and government agencies.

HDPE CONDUIT APPLICATIONS

  • Power Utilities - lower voltage power lines 15-96kV
  • Telecommunications - fiber optic network backbones
  • CATV - Cable Television
  • SCADA - Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition
  • FTTH - Fiber To The Home or node
  • ITS - Intelligent Transportation Systems
  • Highway Lighting
  • Other Underground Utilities

Our Mission

To expand knowledge of the uses and benefits of HDPE conduit for Power and Communications applications.

HIGH DENSITY POLYETHYLENE (HDPE) CONDUIT

The preferred material to house and protect electrical power and telecommunications cables within. It offers unmatched corrosion and chemical resistance, is flexible and durable, and is available in long coil lengths to reduce joints and installation time. HDPE conduit is available in a variety of sizes, colors, dimensions and lengths. HDPE is also used for cable-in-conduit conductors.

CONDUIT EDUCATION

As per our Mission, the Power & Communication Division provides a range of education materials to ensure that HDPE Conduit is specified and used correctly. Include are Webinars, Presentations, Videos and on-line learning. Visit the PCD Education page.

FAQs, Publications & Online Conduit Tools

Our Frequently Asked Question (FAQ) page provides answers to many common questions: Go FAQ.

The Power & Communications Division publishes numerous Technical Reports, Technical Notes, Model Specification and Recommendations providing guidance on the proper use of HDPE Conduit. Visit our Publications Page at PCD Literature.

The Conduit Design Calculator is a software tool that aids in determining the most appropriate wall thickness of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) conduit installed via horizontal directional drilling (HDD) techniques, while automating the Mini-HDD calculations described in PPI TR-46 Guidelines for Use of Mini-Horizontal Directional Drilling for Placement of High Density Polyethylene Pipe.

The Conduit Calculator can be found HERE.

CODES AND STANDARDS

The Power & Communications Division is very active in the relevant Codes & Standard, ensuring that codes and standards remain relevant and up to date. PCD directly supports ASTM, CSA, NEMA, UL, NFPA codes and standard.
